Burns Lake resident Ele Schultz took this photo of a cinnamon black bear by Hwy. 16, between Topley and Houston. According to the B.C. Conservation Service, bear populations are at their highest peak in recent years. Conservation officers destroyed 106 black bears, and four grizzly bears around the province in April and May – the highest numbers of bears killed ever recorded by the ministry. “We’ll have very busy years and then it’ll slow down again,” conservation officer Simon Gravel said.

The Houston Farmer’s Market has begun once again at Steelhead Park. Everything is locally made, baked, or grown. There are many vendors to entice all your desires. Sullivan Motor Products (SMP) celebrated their 45 anniversary last Saturday. Hot dogs were cooking, donations were being received to support Jonathan Dieleman’s training for the upcoming paralymics in Japan. SMP presented Dieleman with a cheque for $650 which were proceeds from Sullivan Motor Products RV grand opening in Smithers on May. 29 and donations they raised at their anniversary celebration.

Houston Pro-life and volunteers participated in an all-day flag display sponsored by ‘We Need A Law’ in our community on June 24. 10,000 pink and blue flags were inserted along Hwy. 16 which represented 100,000 boys and girls lives lost to abortion every single year in Canada.
