The expanding joys of being a kid

Dawn Potvin, It Dawned on Me

Right now seems to be a good time to be a kid in Houston.

I can remember getting to go to the odd local farm or educational point of interest for school field trips, but nowadays the ante definitely seems to have been upped.

Gone are the days of hopping on a school bus for the day, now our kids are becoming world travellers while they are still in school.

A large group of Houston Secondary students are headed to Europe for a spectacular “field trip”, as a result of a ton of hard work and fundraising.

As we speak they are probably ogling the Eiffel tower in Paris with their classmates.

What an experience to be had from these young people, something that they can take with them for the rest of their lives.  Well worth all the hard work on the part of their parents and organizers, I say.

It’s exciting times - we also have a group of boys that are off to Surrey to participate in the Midget Provincial hockey championships.

These boys have worked hard throughout the year, and it has paid off in spades.

They will now represent our little community and hopefully come home champions.

I don’t mean to sound cliché, but I think the small victory is them getting to experience this in the first place, everything else is gravy.

I’ve said it before that I don’t think we give our local youth enough credit, it seems to me that a lot of them are mature beyond their years, and they all have the ability to carry themselves as young adults when they are away from home, especially if Mom and Dad aren’t around.

All we hope for as parents is that our little darlings continue to shine without parental supervision, and uphold their manners while still managing to have fun.

I wish the Midgets the best of luck, I don’t even have to say “Do us proud”, as they already have.  I can’t wait to hear the Europe stories when the HSS kids get home – they are all lucky to have these life experiences.
