Prices not that bad

Editor: I’m writing in reference to BC Hydro’s announced rate increases which could be as much as 50% over the next few years. I suspect many people in Houston are probably cringing at the thought of paying more for electricity.

Well, I’m originally from Ontario, and I would like to encourage Houston Today readers to put BC Hydro’s rate increases into perspective: electricity rates in Ontario are double what they are here in BC, and they’re headed higher as coal-fired plants are pulled from service.

People in BC just don’t realize how lucky they are to have relatively inexpensive, cleanly-generated hydroelectricity.  Keeping these hydroelectric assets in good working shape is well worth the cost.  And in the end, I can guarantee you that BC is still going to have one of the lowest electricity rates in North America.
