January 12, 1946 - February 25, 2020
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Hank Buursema. Hank is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Amy; his oldest son Steven (Sara); his daughter Catherine (Tony); his youngest son David; his brother Andy (Mona); his sister Jean; 4 step-grandchildren; and one step greatgrandchild. Hank was predeceased by his parents, Fritz and Hendrika Buursema.
Hank was born January 12, 1946 in Aduard, the Netherlands. His family immigrated to McBride, BC when Hank was 3 years old. In 1951 they moved to Smithers where Hank was raised and in 1967 married Amy. In 1970 the couple moved to Houston where they had their 3 children. Hank was the manager of the Super Valu meat department; ran his own business with his wife for several years; then returned to Super Valu as a meat cutter. In 2007 he became owner/operator of Super Valu until he retired in June 2016. During their retirement, Hank and Amy spent many weeks camping and traveling in their motorhome, which Hank loved to do.
Hank was very dedicated to his community. He joined the Volunteer Fire Department in February 1977 and was an active member for 43 years. Hank also served as a councillor for the District of Houston from 1992 until the end of 2011, a total of almost 20 years.
The family would like to extend their sincere Thanks to the amazing team of doctors and nurses of the Smithers and Prince George hospitals for the outstanding care that Hank received.
There will not be a funeral service. A celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date.
