George David Bowler

Sep 4, 1940 – Mar 10, 2018
George David Bowler passed away peacefully in his home in Stewart on Saturday, March 10th, 2018. He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen of 52 years on September 28th, 2017. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Brian) and his son, Earl (Susan), grandsons Blair and Aidan, granddaughters Caitlin and Chloe.

George was born in Vancouver but spent much of his formative years in the interior around the Quesnel and Williams Lake area, working in the logging and saw milling industry from an early age until he left to finish his education in Concord, California with his favourite aunt Dorothy and uncle Paul. Once he finished high school, George returned to the Horsefly area of BC where he continued in various logging ventures until he met Ellen Robins and married in 1965.

Around 1970, after his two children were born, the young family travelled to northern BC, settling first in Thornhill before moving briefly to Stewart to work for Bonley Logging. In 1973, George began his own logging company in Port Simpson but decided after a year to head back to Stewart. He then worked for Granduc Mine, as a heavy duty mechanic and also operated machinery before purchasing a service station in the late 70’s, which he expanded and operated for over 15 years. He then returned to the logging industry working for the Elsworth Brothers and then finally Soucie Construction until his retirement in 2011.

After his wife, Ellen had moved into a care facility in Smithers in 2006, George continued to enjoy time with friends and family. In 2011, his longtime friend and companion, Marilyn came to visit and fell in love with the town and people of Stewart and never left, bringing George much happiness living in the town that he always cherished.

There will be a celebration of life for George and Ellen Bowler on Saturday, June 2nd, 2018 at the Al Lawrence Memorial Arena in Stewart, BC at 2:00 pm.

Interment to follow at the Ward’s Pass Cemetery.
