Two Smithers women killed in crash near Hixon

RCMP have closed Highway 97 after a crash near Ahbau Creek killed two people.

Quesnel RCMP have responded to the scene of a two vehicle collision on Highway 97 at Ahbau Creek, between Prince George and Quesnel.

The incident claimed the lives of two occupants of an SUV that collided with a commercial transport. The crash was reported to the police at 10:08 a.m. Thursday.

The crash occurred when a commercial transport truck with two trailer units travelling northbound lost control striking a southbound sport utility vehicle killing its two occupants instantly.  A 61-year-old woman and a 64-year- woman - both of Smithers died as a result of the crash. The names of both women are being withheld at the request of their families.

The driver of the transport truck was transported to Quesnel’s G.R. Baker Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and later released.  The truck and trailer unit have been towed and will undergo a mechanical inspection by investigators.

A collision reconstructionist was called from Prince George to evaluate the scene.

Road conditions at the time were poor. While the weather itself is for the most part good, the temperature in this area has gone from above freezing to well below in a short period of time, leaving the roadway icy.
