On Nov. 21 the Dze L K’ant Friendship Centre Society used funding from Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity Recreational Council (I-SPARC) to fund a cultural workshop on hide tanning. The workshop was taught by 32 year old Leo, a Houston community member, who had learned from a taxidermist in Quebec. Seen here is student,William who is preparing the hide for stretching by removing the hair. Workshops for beading, traditional art and archery are to start in January. Grade 10 and 11 students were instructed in the metal shop room on the process of tanning. (L-R) Josiah, William, Jason, and Graysen are seen here with hide stretched out on a wood frame. The hide is from a male deer shot and dressed by a mother and daughter. It was the daughter’s first deer. (Angelique Houlihan photo/Houston Today)
