Charrine Lace owner of Wet’suwet’en Native Arts, instructed a quill arts workshop at the Dze L Kant Friendship Centre in Houston on Nov. 10 from 1-3.p.m. Porcupine quills that were used had been harvested on Aug. 18. In attendance were five ladies. Traditionally, girls would sit at their mom’s foot for the best view for learning. For quill art the quills must not be broken, they are sorted by size and then soaked in order for them to be pliable. Then the tips are cut off and anchored with an initial stitch. To add colour the quills would be dyed before hand using roots, flowers,or barks. (Angelique Houlihan photo/Houston Today)
