New docks to replace the old ones well past their useful age have arrived in the Village of Granisle as it embarks upon its project to rebuild the marina.

Road closure signs are in place at the marina hill access point for vehicles but when construction begins, the area will be completely closed to the public, the Village of Granisle council was informed at its May 9 meeting.

Actual construction and placement is scheduled to begin June 15 with mid-August pencilled in as a final completion date.

The village council has requested a security presence at the project and will share the costs.

A series of senior government grants amounting to $1,625,300 — $1 million from the federal government and $625,300 from two provincial programs — has provided the financing for the project.

Involved are the new docks, new piling and the breakwater replacement.

The village council earlier this month decided to purchase nine additional docks using $65,100 from the infrastructure and planning fund.

Current facilities have wooden floating pontoon floats which are long past their anticipated life expectancy.

Constructed in the early 1990s, the marina is owned and operated by the Village of Granisle and is a key recreational amenity for the community and region and it is also an economic generator by attracting visitors to the area.

The village’s objective is to increase tourism and other recreational traffic by using the new marina as an inducement.

The marina is also one of only two freshwater marinas between Prince George and Prince Rupert.
