Houston, Burns Lake, Smithers, Vanderhoof, and Prince Rupert had a girls rugby play off at Houston Secondary School on Sept. 29, 2017. Scores were not recorded as this tournament was intended as a friendly playoff. Regional zones for girls rugby will be in Prince Rupert on the weekend of Oct. 13, 2017 and Oct. 14, 2017.

On Wednesdays at the Pleasant Valley Plaza there is a seniors bowling league at 1:15 p.m. Seniors 55 and older can play three games for $10 and enjoy a great social activity. There are many other leagues people can play in, call the bowling league at 250-845-2298.

Riding and grinding Houston bikes trails

Volunteers of the Houston Mountain Bike Association attend a work-bee to rake and prep trails so that they remain in ideal conditions for riders of all age demographics to enjoy. There is a shuttle that runs regularly on Tuesday nights, which is $5 per rider, volunteers are free of charge. The shuttle can carry up to six bikes with room in the back of the pick up for more. On Sept. 5 there was a shuttle at 5 p.m. to take riders and volunteers up to the Mount Harry Davis trails.

Gallery: Houston Leisure Facility annual kids triathlon

On Aug. 26 at the Houston Leisure Facility, the annual kids triathlon had 19 kids participate this year. There are four different age groups, prizes were given by draw, and every kid received a prize. Depending on their age, the children started at different time intervals competing in running, swimming, and biking. Parents were able to participate in the triathlon showing their support along the way.

Houston’s basketball star - Ruth Hamblin - made locals proud one more time as she helped the Canadian Women’s National Basketball Team defeat Argentina 67-65 in the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup final on Aug. 13, 2017.
