Seniors association continues to improve hall for community

New LED lights and toilets are some of the upgrades coming to the hall

The Seniors Citizens Association Branch 97 in Houston is continuing its efforts to improve its hall and services for community members.

The association recently repainted the floor in the hall's game room area, including court lines for pickleball, which has become a popular activity. The hall has regular pickleball on Tuesday evenings and senior pickleball on Wednesday evenings.

The funding for the painting was paid for by a grant from LNG Canada, and Seniors Hall president Wayne Standbridge is hoping to get another grant from the Bulkley Valley Credit Union in the near future to help install new LED lights.

"We would also like to install new toilets in the women's washroom," he said. "We were fortunate to have one toilet donated to us."

Standbridge added new computers are also on the hall's wish list, which has been discussed with the hall's board members.

"We have applied for some funding for some updates such as new computers, better lighting and some painting," said secretary and treasurer Shannon Clarke.

Clarke recently joined the association's board last month and has attended two meetings thus far. There are four other directors, in addition to Standbridge and Clarke, who make up the rest of the board.

The ongoing upgrades and additions are crucial to the hall, according to Standbridge.

"Keeping our society updated helps keep the social activities strong, giving seniors a place to enjoy company," he said.

There have been discussions in the past about making the hall pet-friendly to allow dogs inside, but no changes have been made and the hall remains pet-free.

Residents of Houston can become members of the Seniors Hall at any time for a small fee, which allows them to participate in all events and activities.
