Twain Sullivan students were at the Houston Community Cemetery today, Nov. 8, for an annual reflection of the meaning of Remembrance Day by visiting the graves of veterans.
"We will be arriving at 10:30 a.m. where we will provide service by cleaning the headstones and tidying any debris that may have blown into the cemetery," said Twain Sullivan librarian Tanya Margerm leading up to the visit.
It's an act of service originating with the No Stone Left Alone Memorial Foundation of Edmonton which organized the first such visit by young people to a cemetery in 2011.
A ceremony at the cemetery began at 10:45 a.m. with poetry readings, music and other readings from the school's Grade 5/6 class.
A moment of silence followed after which children placed a red rose on each veteran's grave so that 'No Stone Stands Alone'," said Margerm.
Community members were invited to share the day with the students.
Since its first event in 2011, No Stone Left Alone has grown so that in 2023 there were 287 events involving 11,340 students tending to 80,838 headstones.

Houston Secondary School also observed the meaning behind Remembrance Day today, Nov. 8.

Through the Pleasant Valley Branch 249 of the Royal Canadian Legion, a ceremony was held at the school.

Present were executive members of the branch:

Sergeant of Arms: Gary Timms

Master of Ceremony: Dorrance Murphy

Flag Carriers: Ambrose Kelly, President, Brian Timms, Vice President, Margaret Murphy, member, Debbie Bergdresser, Ladies Auxiliary.

On Nov. 11 itself, the branch will be involved at a service at the community hall, at the cenotaph and at the branch.

The community hall service begins at 10 a.m. after which a parade forms to leave the hall for the cenotaph at 10:40 a.m.

This portion has:
