Community members gathered the afternoon of Sept. 14 at Branch 249 of the Royal Canadian Legion to help celebrate its 70th anniversary.
A barbecue and music from Rocky Mountain Music drew many to the location.
"It was a huge success," said branch executive member Joanne Woodbeck of the occasion. "It was kind of cold and icky and it rained a few times, but people still came out."
Those who attended the evening dance and midnight buffet also enjoyed themselves, she added.
Woodbeck said the Sept. 14 celebration helped raise the profile of the branch which traces its charter meeting back to Sept. 8, 1954.
Over the years the branch has supported veterans and their families in many ways.
It has also donated towards post secondary education and has supported the local army cadet corps.
Veterans and their families and others who need transportation to medical appointments, stores or to visit friends and families can take advantage of a shuttle service offered by the branch.
The branch moved into its current building in 1972, following the purchase of the property in 1970.
Just recently, the branch has been embarking upon a wholesale renovation of its lounge area, a project that includes new washroom, a new ceiling, new lighting, new doors, new windows and new flooring.
