Raised garden beds at Houston Link to Learning's community garden will soon be brimming with produce.

A five-year lease will see Houston Link to Learning's community garden into its 30th year.

The lease is for $1 a year and is for the District of Houston-owned property at 2620 Copeland Ave. North.

"Over the years we have added so many pieces with various grants, more recently these have included a greenhouse, more raised beds, an outdoor kitchen and a grassed area for additional programming, it really is an amazing space," said Marian Ells, Houston Link to Learning's executive director.

The development comes with maintenance needs and this year some of the 30 raised beds for individual use have been replaced and others repaired.

The main community section of the generates produce for some of Houston Link to Learning's food programs and also to the summer season farmers market. Money from market sales goes back to support the garden.

With spring here, the Houston Link to Learning is starting registration for raised beds on May 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its main office. People can also call 250-8845-2727 to set a time to register.

"We are having a BBQ that day for our food kitchen from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This again is at our office and not at the garden. The garden is not quite ready for a lot of people," Ellis noted.

There is no cost to having a raised bed but Houston Link to Learning does ask those who get a raised bed to volunteer time, if possible, to maintain the community garden.
