The largest grant received in the history of the Houston Mountain Bike Association is providing the means for a significant expansion of the Mount Harry Davis trail network.
And, significantly, the $408,742 from the provincial government is being enhanced by donated rental equipment and materials.
"These in-kind contributions will help us extend the scope of the project, including more day-use sites, improved trail access and expanding parking," said association marketing director Joshua Seinen.
More than 5km of new trail construction is being planned with a concentration on boosting the trail network's family riding hub and its amenities.
Hungry riders will soon be able to use an outdoor kitchen and a wood-fired pizza oven.
"It's designed to become a welcoming, central space for families, riders and community gatherings, " said Seinen. This kind of infrastructure supports both local use and regional tourism."
A key priority will appeal to all skill levels as the plan is to build inclusive trails with green and blue flow lines and a dedicated up track for beginner to intermediate riders.
Meanwhile, the club will use its annual. funds to develop more technical black and double-black trails for more advanced riders. That level of trail has been missing has not been offered currently.
Seinen expects half of the grant will be used this year and the other half next year, a decision that will allow the work to be planned and carried out carefully.
This is the ninth year for the association with a membership forecast of more than 50 people as word spreads of what is taking place.
"We estimate about 100 regular riders in the region, with even more occasional users and visitors passing through Houston to check out the network for the first time," Seinen added.
The philosophy of the association is such that its efforts are aimed at community resilience and connection, factors that has it teaming up with the Morice Mountin Nordic Ski Club to launch the Morice Mountain Motivator Series. Seinen describes it as a way to bring runners, bikers and outdoor enthusiasts together for a shared experience.
"Together we can raise the bar, tell a new story for Houston and bring everyone along for the ride," he said.
And to help spread the word in the region and beyond, the association is building up its social media presence.
