Construction fencing around the duck pond area has been placed while significant viewing platform and other upgrades take place.

Work is continuing this week on an extensive upgrade of the duck pond infrastructure and immediately adjacent trails.

The District of Houston had planned for the work to be finished the end of October but not all of the material it needed could be obtained to meet that schedule so a new completion date of Nov. 15 has been set, said District projects coordinator Scott Sanders.

"The existing platform was in a state of disrepair and deemed unsafe, so the replacement project was approved by council for 2024, thanks in large part to a generous $50,000 donation from TC Energy," he said.

Improvements and additions include an accessible ramp, two larger viewing platforms featuring benches and a pergola-style roof over one of the viewing platforms.

"We’ll be enhancing the trail and benches  in front of the duck pond to refresh the area and make it an even more enjoyable spot for visitors," Sanders added.

The duck pond and trail is one of the more popular outdoor amenities in Houston.

In the meantime, the District is asking people to stay away from the area as a safety precaution. It has also said the removal of construction fencing and throwing it into the pond has delayed workers.
