Editor:
It’s not the news that Houston wanted to hear about Canfor but I do think it’s what most of us knew was going to happen.
I feel they have always been a company of scoundrels. Saying one thing to your face and doing something else the minute you turn your back. Do you remember them saying if they got what they wanted from the B.C. Government and the Indigenous people they would rebuild and have the mill up and running by 2025?
Well, I think they got what they wanted and now their excuse according to Stephen Mackie is due to some of the persistent challenges that they see in our province of B.C. And also, the cumulative impact of some of the policy and regulatory choices that are being made in the province.
The CEO Don Kayne said it’s too difficult to predict operating conditions sufficient to spend $200 million on a new Houston mill but the vice president Stephen Mackie told the Houston Today that it would be wrong to consider that Canfor is fully abandoning its plan to replace its Houston mill. We are all aware that each passing year the cost to rebuild would definitely go up.
I believe that they are just saying this so they can hold onto their timber rights. Houston council needs to act fast to make sure no more of our logs leave this area.
Canfor is not thinking about Houston or the people who depend on the jobs the mill provided. Their thoughts are all about how much they can still take from our town. I believe strongly Canfor will keep making excuses about the rebuild so that they can keep their forestry license or timber wrights so they can keep stealing our logs in order to keep another mill running . That’s the kind of scoundrels they are.
Mark my word, if they’re not willing to spend the $200 million now they are not going to be willing to spend a higher amount to rebuild the mill a year from now. Please don’t let Houston be hood-winked by a company who does not have our best interest at heart.
Sincerely,
Georgina Dotto
