Open fire ban in effect July 5 across Northwest Fire Centre.

Effective from 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday, July 5, 2024, open fires classified as Category 2 and Category 3 will be prohibited across the Nadina Fire Zone, Bulkley Fire Zone, and a portion of the Skeena Fire Zone, encompassing the Nadina Forest District, the Skeena area of the Skeena/Stikine Forest District, and the Old Kalum area of the Coast Mountains Forest District. This fire ban is prompted by anticipated warmer and drier weather conditions.

In addition to Category 2 and Category 3 open fires, the prohibition extends to fireworks, including firecrackers, and sky lanterns. These restrictions apply to all public and private lands unless otherwise exempted by enactment or local government bylaw. Individuals are advised to consult local authorities before initiating any fire-related activities.

Category 1 campfires, which are no larger than half a metre high by half a metre wide, remain permissible under this prohibition, as do cooking stoves utilizing gas, propane, or briquettes.

All Category 2 and Category 3 open fires must be fully extinguished by 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday, July 5, 2024.

Violation of the open burning prohibition may result in penalties including a $1,150 fine, an administrative penalty of up to $10,000, or, upon conviction, fines up to $100,000 and/or imprisonment for one year. Those responsible for contraventions leading to wildfires may also be liable for firefighting costs and damages to affected resources.
