The Houston Group to Sponsor Syrian Refugees has collected $28,600, so far and are well on their way to reach their $30,000 goal.

Co-chair Bobby Seinen stresses that sponsoring Syrian refugees is a community project and not a pet project of her's.

They currently have a few future events to further fundraise.

“We are looking forward to Search and Rescue and the Houston volunteer firefighters putting on a pancake sausage breakfast,” said Seinen.

The location of the event is to be determined. The group initially wanted to have it in front of the arena but they have not received approval.

“There's a council meeting on April 5 and Search and Rescue's rep is going to go before them,” said Seinen.

Some members were away from the March 22 meeting because of spring break, Seinen said, and therefore they could not be updated on the progress of raffle licences.

The HGSSR has also received a donation of a storage locker from Houston Storage, which they will use to store household items.

They have also done their second collection from the Houston Christian Reformed Church on March 20. The group will not know how much is raised there until the first week of April.

They have also received a grant from Dungate Community Forest.

“We are collecting materials needed to make the application — the paperwork,” said Seinen.
