Houston Link to Learning (HLL) is excited to announce that we have received two grants which will support us to host a ‘Canada 150’ event at the Houston Community Garden.

The first grant is from ‘Tree Canada’ and the Government of Canada and will support HLL to host a celebration that will engage the community in the planting of native trees and shrubs and the expansion of the Houston Community Garden.

The second grant is from Bulkley Valley Foundation Canada 150 and will help us coordinate this fabulous event and provide activities and a BBQ.

Tree Canada’s corporate partner CN will be covering costs of a commemorative plaque.

Last year the District of Houston reconfigured the parking lot at the garden. The new parking lot is in previously unused space but a number of trees were removed to create the new parking lot. The old parking lot is now open space and can be used as expanded garden space. The new trees and shrubs will be planted around the garden and will also create a border between the old and new parking lots.

Our aim is to provide a legacy for the community of native trees and shrubs which will make the community garden space more inviting for participants and expand the useable garden space. HLL also aims to provide local indigenous berry shrubs that will provide fruit for years to come and teach participants how to use and preserve them”

Houston Community Garden is more than just a garden; we focus on literacy by providing informal learning opportunities for families and individuals.

The Garden is made up of 35 raised beds and a large community space. Community members have their own bed to grow fresh vegetables and produce for their own use. The only cost to the participants is that we ask them to volunteer to help maintain the Community garden. Produce from the Community Garden is sold at the Farmer’s Market to generate revenue to support the program or to community members in need.

This project is made possible by Tree Canada, the Government of Canada and Bukley Valley Foundation Canada 150
