Houston’s basketball star - Ruth Hamblin - made locals proud one more time as she helped the Canadian Women’s National Basketball Team defeat Argentina 67-65 in the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup final on Aug. 13, 2017.

Although Hamblin has been training with the Women’s National Basketball Team since 2013, this was her first year being in the team’s final roster.

“We won the whole tournament, bringing home gold for the second time in Canada’s history,” she said proudly.

Canada’s first title at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup (formerly called FIBA Americas Championship for Women) came in 2015 after defeating Cuba 82-66 in Edmonton.

After spending two weeks in Argentina competing at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, Hamblin did not have much time to enjoy being back home as she left the country again last week - this time for Australia, where she will compete with the Australian Women’s National Basketball League.

“It’s basically my way up, continuing to play the game and hold my skills so I can be my best for the Canadian Basketball Team,” she explained.

Hamblin expects to stay in Australia until January.

Although she said that she was “excited and nervous,” the talented player has gathered experience from playing basketball in over 15 countries since 2012.
