The search continues for two snowmobilers who went into the icy Salmon River north of Prince George on Monday.

Mounties says three men were snowmobiling on the frozen river when the ice broke and one of them fell through. The other two jumped in to rescue him, but only one managed to get out.

Emergency Management BC and Prince George Search and Rescue were called out. A helicopter team went looking any sign of the pair until nightfall, while a ground search lasted until midnight.

The two men, ages 36 and 31, live in the Prince George area.

“We barely had a cold spell this year,” RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass said. “It was just risky behaviour. It’s tragic.”
