Maggie Kenzle, has been chosen by the Houston Bulkley Valley Credit Union (BVCU) to participate in the Youth Excellence Society (YES), which is a week long co-operative leadership program and summer camp for youth all over B.C.

“The Youth Excellence Society is a non-partisan, charitable organization dedicated to the promotion of co-operative young leadership,” states its website.

The program offers the opportunity to make new friends, skill building that challenges youth in outdoor recreation, and fully support from the coordinators.

Kenzle will be travelling to Vancouver Island’s Lake Cowichan where the camp will be held between July 9, 2017 to July 15, 2017.

“I applied for this program because I went last year and had so much fun and met new friends,” said Kenzle.

Kenzle said that some of the things she found appealing about the program was that there were lots of people from all over B.C.

“Everyone is looking to make new friends,” said Kenzle.

This year Kenzle hopes to continue to improve her social skills and maintain an open mind while at the camp to retain as much as she can to benefit her future.

“This program can benefit my future by learning skills such as making new friends, travelling on my own, and social responsibility,” she said.

Kenzle said that last year they played a lot of activities that worked on different skills including leading teams, getting to know the other campers, and making new friends.

“We played a lot of card games in our spare time and also made bracelets,” said Kenzle.

“Last year when I went to YES camp I made a lot of new friends and to this day have stayed in contact with many of them. I hope the same will happen this year.”

For over five years, the BVCU has sponsored up to four youth to attend the YES camp retreat. Between Houston, Smithers, Burns Lake, and Hazleton the four candidates are chosen by BVCU.

“Maggie Kenzle demonstrates leadership skills and is active in our community,” said Tanya Amonson, branch manager for the Houston BVCU. “The Bulkley Valley Credit Union has proudly served Hazelton, Smithers, Houston and Lakes District for over 73 years and remains committed to the social and economic well-being within the communities it serves.”
