Communities across British Columbia looking to boost their outdoor recreational activities can now apply to the Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC.

The application period opened on March 28 and will remain open until April 30. According to a press release from the fund, the grants support “community-based initiatives that create and shape meaningful outdoor recreational and nature-based experiences for British Columbians.”

The press release further explained that in 2023, the province contributed a one-time grant of $10 million to the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC which led to the establishment of the endowment fund, The Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC. This endowment fund will be a “perpetual funding source for the grant program.”

“By investing in access, inclusivity, education and stewardship, we aim to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy and appreciate the natural beauty of British Columbia,” said executive director, Louise Pedersen in the press release.

The fund’s website details that the following organizations should consider applying:

•Registered charities and incorporated non-profit organizations

•Local governments in BC

•Indigenous governments in BC

The media release explained the following applicants should consider applying:

•Align with the purpose of the fund

•Align with one (or more) of the three priorities

•Are ready-to-go which means that any required authorizations are in place before applying

•The project takes place in natural settings—such as parks, trails, and natural aquatic areas—and does not include activities that take place in highly cultivated recreation areas (such as playgrounds, skate parks or sports fields)

The media release also noted that a 50 per cent matching contribution is necessary and that it can be fulfilled with the following:
